Ace of Spades Patches and Playing Card Patch Designs

Finding the Pattern

Every once in a while, we notice a trend in custom patch design that seems to be spreading. Sometimes, it’s a specific type of thread color, and other times it’s a common design element like a shield shape, a specific type of skull used in the artwork, or a playing card design.

Playing card patches are used by all kinds of different groups. Ace of spades military patches and ace of spades motorcycle patches are extremely popular, but we’ve seen just about every kind of playing card design you can imagine. Today, we decided to share a few of our favorite examples of playing card patches, and talk about the different ways our customers incorporate playing cards into their designs.

Why Are There so Many Ace of Spades Patches?

Have you ever wondered why so many different playing card patches feature the ace of spades? You don’t have to look far before you find some ace of spades morale patches, club patches or event patches, so we decided to do a little digging.

Ace of Spades Skull patches by signaturepatches

First up, we have these ace of spades skull patches. They were ordered by the same customer, and they have very similar designs. However, the patches use different thread colors and the spade on each patch is different. The brown version of the design has a more subdued spade, while the red ace of spades patch has a more elaborate design.

The ace of spades is the top card of every deck and the highest card in almost every card game. The fact that it’s the first card you see when you open a deck of cards and that it’s almost always the most valuable card in a game could explain why so many people choose the ace of spades for their playing card patch designs. However, there is another possible reason.

A Company Patches by Signature Patches

Cardmakers have been customizing their own ace of spades cards since as early as the 17th century. Even today, card makers like Bicycle have a unique ace of spades design that serves as the company’s brand. So, creating your own ace of spades patch design with an elaborate spade is a traditional way of establishing your team’s identity.

Creating Your Own Playing Card Patches

You don’t need to design an ace of spades patch is you want a playing card design. There are 52 cards in a deck, after all, and you can choose any combination of cards and suites for your patch design. However, keep in mind that all of the different cards you want to include in your design need to fit on the same patch. If you want to make separate patches for every card in a deck, we would need to make a new mold for each design.

When our customers choose a playing card design that’s not an ace of spades patch, we’ve noticed that they usually choose cards with numbers and suits that mean something to their team.

For example, these club patches and military unit patches use playing cards to represent their team numbers. Chapter 225 of a club in Atlantic County, New Jersey used the two of clubs, the two of hearts and the five of spades to represent their chapter number, and the Delta Deuces included all of the twos from a deck of cards in their unit patch design. When you design your own playing card patches, think about what card numbers and what card suits will have the most meaning to your team.

Something else to keep in mind is the shape of the patch you want to create. As you’ve seen already, some patches have rectangular shapes or custom shapes with hot cut edges, while others are traditional round patches with merrow edges.

Choosing a patch shape and patch edging is mostly a matter of personal preference, and knowing all your options will help you choose the best possible design. You can learn about shapes, edging and other custom design options on our blog.
